This painting is a portrait of an ancient storytelling art form of India - Kalamkari which combined hand and block printing to bring alive the tales that were passed on from one generation to the next.
While the cotton fabrics were painted with a kalam i.e pen - made from a sharp pointed bamboo nibbled applicator that regulates the flow of color on the fabric - forming the backbone of this art, the repetitive patterns of elegant motifs were printed using intricately carved wooden teak blocks.
