Title: Second Thoughts
Medium: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 109.2 x 91.4 x 2.5 cm (43" x 36" x 1")
The work is a play on expectations and translations of migrant bodies. It attempts to empower the figures through ritual. The pointillism inspired yellow brushstrokes are a reference to Hindu practices that revolve around applying turmeric paste to various parts of the body. It is a celebration of various symbols of beauty lost to Eurocentrism. It recognizes the effects of assimilation and loss of culture within an immigrant experience and centres the body as a fragmented and hybrid archive of dualities.
